Basic Information On Duodenal Switch Surgery

By Paulette Mason

Modern technology has truly revolutionized the way most people live. It has given the populace with gadgets and inventions. It has provided society with all sorts of things that make daily routine done more effectively and efficiently.

But, as with a double edged sword, these things have also affected the lifestyle of most people. The appliances that meant to make things easier are also the very things that advocate laziness. Instead of applying effort to get things done, most domestic tasks are achieved by with a single push of a button. This push button idea has led to the increase in the cases of obesity in the entire world. Since obesity can lead to so many complications, people undergo duodenal switch surgery in Mexico to maintain a healthy figure.

Bariatric surgeries are also known as weight loss invasive procedures. They are performed on people who are obese, and comes in three different methods. These three are known as the Roux en Y, the Lap Band procedure, and the duodenal switch.

The lap band method employs the use of a rubber band like device that is placed upon the stomach. This band limits your ability to eat more during meals, because of the restricted capacity of the stomach to hold down food. It is also referred to as adjustable gastric banding by those who perform the said bariatric operation.

The gastric bypass, also the Roux en Y, is another type of weight loss surgery. This works by creating a small pouch by cutting of the rest of the stomach. The rest of the stomach and the duodenum is bypassed as the jejunum is connected to the smaller pouch. Since the the duodenum is then attached after a certain length of the jejunum to give the food the needed gastric juices for them to successfully break down into smaller pieces.

The biliopancreatic diversion method, more commonly known as the duodenal switch, is the most effective bariatric surgery as compared to the other two. It is characterized by the removal of more than half of the whole stomach. Majority of the length of the intestines are then passed over and rendered useless as the duodenum is then directly attached to the end part of the intestine. This shorter food flow in the gastric cavity inhibits the intake of calories, which leads to very effective weight loss.

It is also the most effective among the three bariatric surgeries. This ensures the biggest number of good weight loss results. It also has the smallest number of instances of regaining weight among the patients who have tried the said procedure.

It also has the best effects in keeping most obesity related illnesses in check. Diabetes is less likely to happen in DS patients as compared to those who have not gone under the knife. Those who have undergone bariatric procedures are also less likely to die from heart problems nor cancer, unlike those who have not subjected themselves to these invasive methods.

These surgeries are not cosmetic surgeries, in any way. They are not done to remove fatty tissues, as the very familiar liposuction method does. This is done especially for those who are at risk for serious illnesses due to their uncontrolled weight. It comes with complications as well, which is why those who have had the DS should exercise extra care.
