Weight Loss Challenges After Pregnancy

By Trishia Serinton

Weight gain during pregnancy is a natural phenomenon. 'Baby weight' refers to the weight that has gained not only by the growing fetus and the enlarging womb but also the deposition of fat around the abdomen. Losing this weight that has been gained following the delivery of a baby can be quite a task. It can be even more difficult if the woman was overweight prior to getting pregnant.

In this article we shall take a brief look at some of the steps that can be adopted to lose weight after pregnancy.

1. Don't forget to stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water after pregnancy to make sure that dehydration is not an issue. Constantly drinking fluids can help keep the stomach full and control the amount of unhealthy foods that may be consumed. However, only drink what your body asks you to, and try not to over hydrate yourself.

2. Avoid strict dieting

This may sound as surprising advice but trying to lose weight by following a strict diet can reduce the amount of nutrients that you passed down to your baby through breast milk. Weight loss is thought to be more healthy when it is done in a steady and slower pace, instead of trying to drop a lot of weight in a short period of time. Consuming healthy foods such as plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables are excellent at keeping hunger at bay and making sure the weight comes off gradually.

3. Regular exercise is important

Yes, regular exercise still works! Cardiovascular training such as aerobics and even strength exercises can help burn calories while maintaining muscle mass and bone strength. Exercises can include a brisk walk, jogging, swimming and cross-training. Mood is greatly affected by exercise as well, due to the release of endorphins. This helps the mother handle the stress of looking after a baby a lot more effectively. Prior to beginning any exercise regimen, it's very important to consult a physician.

4. Breastfeeding should be continued

Breastfeeding provides the infant with the essential nutrients and fats that are helpful in building up immunity and providing the necessary nutrition. At this time, the full effects that breastfeeding has on weight loss can not be truly determined. Even if it doesn't, it is no reason to stop breastfeeding an infant.

5. Be sure to stay well-rested

The body goes through plenty of changes during a pregnancy, and afterwards, taking care of a newborn can be stressful. Researchers have shown that losing weight from pregnancy is much easier if the mother is getting at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Summary

A new mother can use these simple techniques to effectively lose the weight that the pregnancy has caused for them.
